I chose this book as I was intrigued by the title and having read children’s books called ‘Aliens love Underpants’ and ‘Aliens in Underpants Save the World’, I thought this book may be similar to these. I was in for a surprise and to be honest, wished I had looked The Oatmeal up online prior to receiving the book. I had heard of the book ‘How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You’ but again had not seen or read it.
The Oatmeal uses comic strips and cartoon illustrations to guide you through every day and not so every day events, such as 6 things you really don’t need to take a photo of and Why Captain Higgins is my favourite parasitic flatworm (yes, you read this correctly!).
I am undecided about whether I like this book or not, as it does contain funny, intelligent and original content; however, it also has some content I found (and I’m sure others would find) offensive or unnecessary – there is a large amount of swearing involved in the text. The illustrations are also funny but may be more appealing to some than others.
All in all, this book for me is a coffee table book, but you would need to remember who is at your coffee table at any given time. My 7 year old would like the funny illustrations but I don’t think I would like for him to repeat some of the content!
