One Moment is an aptly titled novel. The teens in this story, particularly the main character Maggie, are reliving one tragic moment in a day when their lives changed forever. Maggie and her boyfriend, Joey, climbed a cliff together to jump into the water below. In the moment before the jump something goes wrong and he tragically dies. Throughout the story, Maggie is stuck in the moment just before the jump trying to piece together their last moment together. In the beginning she can not quite remember what happened even though she has a sense that something did happen that caused Joey to fall. In the days immediately following the accident she becomes obsessed with going over every aspect of their relationship and trying to piece together why Joey was acting strangely in the days before the accident.
This story is also a story of teen friendships and the impact of tragedy on those friendships. The message of this book is that things can change forever in just a moment. I thought the author portrayed grief in a realistic manner, particularly in the way in which each of the teens coped differently after the tragic event. Overall, I liked this story. I liked the characters and they felt genuine to me.
