Oh that face. Those eyes. I was drawn in immediately. How could I not? You see George is a handsome Landseer Newfoundland Dog and when he was just a year old, he faced an uncertain future. That is until Colin became his hero and adopted him. Colin was experiencing some of the darkest moments of his life. His marriage had ended and he entered a deep depression. A friend recommended he get a dog. And that is how their story began.
Free Days with George is a true story about how George and Colin met and about how they each played a role in saving each other from a life of uncertainty and loneliness. In the beginning of the book, Colin reminisces about his childhood days and how he and his brother spent summers with their beloved grandpa, a decorated war hero who had a zest for life and encouraged his grandsons to enjoy life and ‘free days’. A grown-up Colin meets the love of his life and they marry. Four years later, the marriage ends leaving Colin shocked and heartbroken. When he opens his home to George, life slowly takes on new meaning. Colin has a new purpose and George has a new home. Colin’s work takes them from Toronto to California where they spend their time on the beach and on a surf board (yes, George can actually surf and has won awards to prove it). Their journey together is not without hurdles, but with patience and time they both begin to heal and learn to trust again.
This book is beautifully written. It is a story that flows easily from page to page with elements of solemnity and humor found throughout. Photographs are included too which give a glimpse into their lives and is a wonderful addition to the book. Readers will be drawn into their plight and will cheer them on as they each navigate through some of life’s obstacles. The bond between a human and an animal can be powerful. Watching the relationship build between George and Colin is truly joyful and inspiring. A few things I have learned from their story include: never give up; love comes in all different forms; opening your heart to the unknown can have beautiful consequences; and heroes come with four legs too (actually, I already knew this having discovered first hand the power of a pet). Free Days with George also introduces readers to the concept of ‘free days’ – probably making you want to etch out your very own.
Without hesitation I wholeheartedly recommend this book (especially to any animal lovers). It will make you smile, laugh, and cry as the twosome adapt to their new lives together. This inspiring, irresistible, and uplifting story will stay with you long after that last page is read. But a word of caution: if you read this book, be prepared to want your very own “George”! You will love him (and his story with Colin) right from the start.
