James W. Nichol has given us a well-written, complicated murder mystery/thriller. The book begins with the protagonist, Canadian WWII pilot Wilf McLaughlin, under heavy fire and toward the end of the war, beginning his death spiral as his Spitfire speeds to meet the earth the hard way. I’m dead is one of his last thoughts.

The Promised World is a story about fraternal twins, Lila and Billy. The story begins when Lila finds out that Billy has been shot by police when he points a loaded rifle out a hotel window across from an elementary school. “Suicide by police” is the result.
