This book is part of the Joanne Kilbourn Mystery series.
Joanne is 60 years old when she finds out the man who raised her was not her biological father; she learns her biological father was actually a good friend of her dad and a famous visual artist. But both men have passed away leaving Joanne with unanswered questions as she is forced to re-evaluate who she is and where she came from.
When an opportunity arises to participate in a mini-series about the relationship between her biological father’s family and the one she grew up in, Joanne learns much more than she could have ever expected. A Darkness of the Heart will take readers through the ups and downs on Joanne’s road to self-discovery as she navigates her way through all the seedy characters and learns to tell the difference between those who have her best interests at heart and those who don’t.
There are interesting characters at every turn and there never seems to be a dull moment. A little bit of mystery will keep readers on the edge anticipating what is to come. There is a lot going on in this book: Joanne’s youngest daughter is in jeopardy of being swallowed by the entertainment industry; her lawyer husband finds himself involved in a fairly complex case; the teenage daughter of a close friend is sexually assaulted; and a shocking death rocks their world.
The story focuses more on the present but I was longing for more on the past — particularly on her biological father, her mother, and the man who raised her. I find the past can be so much more interesting. But Joanne’s character is likable and her wisdom and strength admirable. The story took a turn I wasn’t expecting but I enjoyed Bowen’s writing style and the ending nonetheless.
If you are a fan of mystery and melodrama, A Darkness of the Heart will not disappoint.
