This story takes place in the quaint community of Heart’s Ease, NL. Ted (aka Asher Corbin, a rock and movie superstar) meets Grace (a local girl) at a Regency ball but Grace doesn’t recognize his superstar persona. Ted’s initial attraction to Grace is fueled even more by her innocence and her lack of knowledge of who he really is. Around her, he can be ‘Ted’ and finds the break from ‘Asher’ refreshing. As Ted and the cast and crew work on his new movie, he elicits help from some friends to help him woo Grace.
Following these characters from their chance encounter to something more is entertaining and fun. Both have secrets that need to be shared. How will Grace react when she discovers who Ted really is? And how will Ted react when Grace confides something about herself. Readers may be surprised by their responses.
I loved this book. The storyline was engaging and flowed well. The writing was clear and simple. The characters were endearing and fun loving. I particularly enjoyed: Grace’s transformation from a reserved and quiet girl to a confident and strong woman; and Ida’s (the 90-something-year-old lady from Heart’s Ease) no-nonsense personality and devotion to Ted. If you are looking for a light-hearted and romantic read over the summer months, I would recommend Barbour’s 21st Century Rake. It has just the right amount of drama and romance to keep the pages turning.
21st Century Rake is the fourth book in the Heart’s Ease romance series. Previous titles include: Against Her Rules, Hard as Ice, and Play Me.
